EPC Introduces the EPC91116 Laser Driver Board for Automotive and Industrial iToF Applications

April 23, 2025 Maurizio Di Paolo Emilio

Built around the AEC-Q101 qualified EPC2203 eGaN® FET, this laser driver evaluation board offers nanosecond-level switching performance within a cost-effective, adaptable platform.

Efficient Power Conversion (EPC) has launched the EPC91116, a high-speed, high-current laser driver evaluation board specifically designed for indirect time-of-flight (iToF) applications in automotive and industrial sensing environments. Centered on the AEC-Q101 qualified EPC2203 eGaN® FET, this evaluation board offers nanosecond-level switching performance within a cost-effective, adaptable platform that streamlines prototyping and speeds up product development cycles.

As iToF technology becomes increasingly essential for functions like driver monitoring systems, in-cabin occupant detection, and 3D spatial mapping in automotive and industrial sectors, engineers are seeking reliable, production-ready development tools. The EPC91116 fulfills this requirement with capabilities including peak current handling above 10 A, minimum pulse widths of 5 nanoseconds, and operating frequencies reaching up to 100 MHz.

Highlighted features:

Automotive-grade Components: Features the EPC2203-an 80 V, 17 A (pulsed), 0.9 mm × 0.9 mm eGaN FET with a total gate charge of 670 pC and ultra-low RDS(on) of 80 mΩ-alongside the AEC-Q100-certified 74LVC2T45GS logic-level translator for robust, automotive-qualified performance.

Streamlined Gate Drive Design: Eliminates the need for dedicated gate drivers by employing a standard CMOS logic IC, enabling reliable GaN switching at frequencies up to 100 MHz.

Versatile Logic Compatibility: Accepts input logic levels ranging from 1.2 V to 5.5 V, supporting a broad array of system configurations with minor adjustments.

Integrated Narrow Pulse Generator (NPG) Option: Allows for accurate, tunable pulse width generation in the 5–60 ns range, enhancing control and precision in laser-driving applications.

Laser-Ready Integration: Comes equipped with the EPC9989 interposer board, allowing straightforward mounting and testing with a variety of laser diodes and load types.

The EPC91116 is well-suited for engineers working on automotive-grade iToF system integration or exploring high-speed power conversion architectures like Class-E amplifiers, SEPIC converters, and other lidar-related systems.
